Whether you’re a trivia buff or just love learning cool information, there’s a lot you may not already know about your teeth! If you’re interested in educating yourself on these dental dynamos, here are a few fascinating facts about them that might surprise you!

Fact #1

When you break a bone or cut your finger, your body knows what to do and will heal itself. Oddly enough, however, your teeth won’t. In fact, the teeth are the only part of your body that don’t heal themselves, making it oh so important to take good care of them, and to see your dentist regularly!

Fact #2

Wondering about wisdom teeth? These weird extra molars are pretty fascinating. Did you know that some people never get them at all, while others can have anywhere between one and six? It’s true! Not only that, but you may or may not need to have them removed, it all depends on whether there’s room for them, they’re damaging other teeth, they’re growing sideways, they hurt, or if they’re prone to excess cavities or gum disease!

Fact #3

Speaking of wisdom teeth, did you know that early man used to get them as a backup pair of molars in their late teens because their second set was typically worn down by the tough foods they ate like raw meat, seeds, roots, and leaves? Today our diets don’t cause as much wear and tear, so wisdom teeth are largely unnecessary.

Fact #4

Tooth enamel is another curiosity. It is the hardest substance in the entire body! Harder than even your bones!

Fact #5

Your mouth is home to a multitude of bacteria. In fact, the average person’s mouth is host to between 200 to 300 different species. While not all bacteria are bad, s. mutans is the variety that is responsible for tooth decay, so be sure to brush and floss well to keep these pesky little guys under control.
